Peace Corps in Thailand

Quick Information

Peace Corps has been in Thailand since 1962--making it one of the first countries of Service.

Ongoing relations and cooperation between the U.S. Government and the Royal Thai Government (RTG) has allowed Peace Corps to serve many years in Thailand.

Over 4,000 people have served in Peace Corps Thailand.

The incoming group (Group 121--of which I belong to) consists of 55 trainees.

Peace Corps Pre-Service Trainees undergo a 10-week intensive process of language, cultural, technical, and safety training.

Volunteers work on a range of projects including: education, healthcare, public works, community development, and infrastructure.

Thailand is often known as the "Land of Smiles."

Thailand, to this day, remains the only country in SouthEast Asia to never be colonized.

Myanmar borders Thailand to the Northwest, Laos to the Northeast, Cambodia to the East, and Malaysia to the South.

Thailand is mountainous to the North with river valleys and plains in the central region, plateaus in the east, and the Southernmost region flows into a narrow isthmus of land.

The climate remains tropical and humid throughout the country with varying monsoon/rainy seasons in the Southwest and Northeast.

In 2004, Southern Thailand suffered the effects of the tremendous Tsunami in SouthEast Asia with almost 5,000 confirmed deaths.

Thailand was known as Siam until 1939.

The population of Thailand is over 63,000,000 people.

Over 90% of the population practice Buddhism.

A majority of the population (close to 80%) are ethnically Thai.

The Thai government consists of a Constitutional Monarchy.

Thailand elected a new Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva on December 15, 2008.

On December 5, 2008, Thais celebrated the 81st birthday of the 9th reigning King, Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The King of Thailand is currently the longest-reining monarch in the world since taking up the thrown on June 9, 1946 at the age of 20.
